Selective Hydrogenation With Copper Catalysts: 1. Isolation and Identification of Isomers Formed During Hydrogenation of Linolenate
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methyl linolenate was hydrogenated with 1050 copper chromite catalyst at 150 C and atmospheric hydrogen pressure. The product was separated into monoene, diene and triene fractions by countercurrent distribution. These fractions were further separated into "arious geometrical isomers. The double bond location in the "arious fractions was determined b" reductiw ozonolysis. Double bonus in both cis anli trans monoene fractions, as wC'll as in cis, trans alJ(I tranS,trans conjugated dienes, were extensi,'cly isomerized. A monoene containing vinylic unsaturation was one of the major products. The nonconjugated dienes were mostly dienes whose double bonds were widely separatC'd. Results are explained on the basis of conjugation of the double bonds in linolenate followed by hydrogen addition.

Selective Hydrogenation of Soybean Oil: XII. Trialkyl Aluminum-Copper 'Stearate Homogeneous Catalysts'
The reaction of copper stearate with triethylaluminurn (TEAL) formed a soluble catalyst that promoted the selective hydrogenation of the linolenyl groups in soybean oil. This homogeneous catalyst was more active than copper-chromite. The activity was enhanced by the addition of silica, alumina or titania. Ethyl alcohol accelerated the hydrogenation when it was added in small amounts and retarde...
متن کاملSelective Hydrogenation With Copper Catalysts: II. Kinetics
To explain the unusually high selectivity of copper catalysts toward linolenate, model compounds were hydrogenated (150 C and atmospheric pressure) and the reaction products analyzed. Products varied depending upon location of the double bonds. Monoenes were not reduced by copper chromite except when the double bond was next to a carboxyl group. Dienes with isolated double bonds also were not r...
متن کاملPilot-Plant Selective Hydrogenation of Soybean Oil: Activation and Evaluation of Copper-Containing Catalysts
In pilot-plant tests, the linolenate content of soybean oil was reduced to less than 1% without increasing the saturates, by hydrogenation to an IV of about 115 with an active copper-chromite catalyst. The linolenate-linoleate selectivity ratio (KLe/KLo ) was from 9 to 12. Several commercial copper-chromite catalysts were used in hydrogenation tests. The activities of four of five commercial ca...

Materials Two soybean oils, partially hydrogenated (IV 119120) in a 2 liter Parr hydrogenator with laboratoryprepared catalysts containing copper (8) at 30 psi and 170 (sample A) and 200 C (sample B), respectively, were used in this investigation. Samples of each were transesterified in methanol with sodium methoxide catalyst, and the methyl esters were distilled under vacuum. Analvses of these...
